Biografía de la profesora: La Señora Garzón es de Bucaramanga, Colombia. Ella ha sido educadora por más de 20 años enseñando a niveles de primaria, secundaria, y universidad. También ha tenido experiencia trabajando con adultos en el aprendizaje del español como segunda lengua. La Sra. Garzón tiene un Grado Master en TESOL de la Universidad de Greensboro.
Descripción del curso: Este curso está diseñado para hispanos hablantes o para estudiantes con un grado de experiencia parecida o igual a la de un hablante nativo del idioma español. El objetivo de esta asignatura es afianzar el uso correcto del español. Esto se logrará desarrollando habilidades de lectura, escritura, conversación y ejercicios de escucha. También tiene como objetivo el conocimiento, el entendimiento y la aceptación de la cultura de las personas que lo hablan. Un componente importante de esta clase es el uso de tecnología como instrumento que ayuda al acceso de información autentica y real.
Objetivos:
Este curso está diseñado para:
1. Desarrollar habilidades de lectura mediante la utilización de una variedad de estrategias de comprensión y de pensamiento crítico
2. Desarrollar la escritura (composición) mediante la construcción de una sólida formación en gramática y vocabulario.
3. Realzar nuestra visión del mundo de la cultura y de la civilización de las comunidades internacionales donde se habla español.

Una variedad de recursos, visuales y manipulativas serán utilizados en la clase para satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes y los requisitos académicos del curso: Materiales complementarios de lectura, cuentos, obras de teatro, diálogos, entrevistas, poemas, programas de video y de radio.
Materiales:
A. materiales básicos como papel, lápices, sacapuntas, borrador, lapiceros (plumas) resaltadores, y una carpeta anillada para el “PORTAFOLIO y el DIARIO”
B. Los estudiantes necesitarán un diccionario English / Spanish and Spanish / English para ser usado en los trabajos de la clase, tarea y proyectos.
Sistemas de calificación:
· Actividades diarias: trabajos en clase, diálogos, dramatizaciones y participación: 30%
· Quizzes: (25%)
· Examen: Mitad de semestre, capítulos o unidades, proyectos (20%)
· Portafolio / Pictionario / Diario: (25%)
El portafolio es revisado cada 10 trabajos. Cada uno necesita ser hecho completo.
· A: 90- 100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% F: 0-69%
Habrá nota de cero (0) por hacer trampa sea por copia oral o escrita. No habrá posibilidad de recuperación de esta nota
Participación: Los estudiantes deben hacer un esfuerzo para participar en las actividades de la clase. Prepararan sus tareas, trabajos y ejercicios asignados antes de la clase, también deberán asistir a la clase completamente, escuchar atentamente a la profesora y a los compañeros de clase y participar de las actividades de grupo.
Tarea: Esto puede incluir lecturas, ejercicios de gramática, secciones de vocabulario, ejercicios usando el Internet. L a tarea es una extensión de la lección de clase, es una forma de refuerzo de aprendizaje y la preparación de la siguiente clase como el repaso de un quiz (prueba) o examen.
Ausencia o entrega de tareas/trabajos tarde: Cuando el /la estudiante se ausente de la clase, él / ella es responsable de obtener la tarea preguntando a la profesora o a un compañero de clase. El estudiante tiene un día de excusa por cada ausencia para entregar sus tareas y trabajos. Las tareas o trabajos entregados tarde no serán calificados a menos que haya una excusa válida y sea aprobado por la Sra. Garzón.
Comunicación y reuniones: El correo electrónico es la mejor manera de contactarme, estaré respondiendo correo lo más pronto posible (en uno o dos días máximos). Si desea tener una reunión conmigo, usted puede llamar a la escuela (Ms. Jennifer Miller) y programar una reunión. Si la reunión es urgente, los padres de familia podrán verme de lunes a viernes de 7:15 AM – 8:15 AM
REGLAS DE LA CLASE
- Llegar a la clase en silencio y permanecer en los asientos asignados
- Tener los materiales de la clase: Portafolio, Pictionario, Diccionario, lápiz, lapicero, etc.
- No se permite ni chicle ni comida en clase. No se permite tampoco el uso de “PED”
- Respetar a la profesora y a los compañeros de clase.
- Levantar la mano para pedir permiso de hablar o de pararse del asiento asignado
- Usar el baño durante el cambio de clase / horas permitidas

Sutton Middle School is an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program School. It is a program of international education designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world.
Teacher Bio: Senora Garzon is from Bucaramanga, Colombia. She has been teaching for more than 20 years. She has been working with elementary through college level. She also has experience working with adults. Señora Garzon holds a Master’s Degree in TESOL from Greensboro College
Course Description: This course is designed to continue developing Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills to communicate in Spanish for Beginner students Level II. This course also focuses on the development of communicative competence in the target language and understanding of the culture(s) of the people who speak the Spanish language. During this course students are required to use the target language (oral way) as much as possible in class. An important component of this class is the use of the language beyond the classroom in the real world. The integration of technology is an important tool we will use in accessing authentic information in the target language and in providing students the opportunity to interact with native speakers.
Objectives:
1. Develop listening, speaking, writing and reading skills while building a solid background in grammar, and vocabulary.
2. Enhance our worldview of the cultures and civilization of the international communities where Spanish is spoken.

Use of Spanish in class: I will conduct the class in Spanish. It is your responsibility to let me know when you do not understand. You are not expected to understand every word that I say. At no time expect that I will translate for you. Your comprehension will improve with time, particularly if you prepare the materials before class and do both homework and listening comprehension exercises on a timely manner and as instructed.
Textbooks: Avancemos Holt McDougal
Additional materials: A variety of resources, visual and manipulative will be utilized to best meet the needs of students and the academic requirements of the course: Supplement reading materials, short stories, skits, dialogues, interview and role-playing situational cards, poems, video programs, TV programs & radio stations in Spanish.
Supplies:
A. Basic School supplies such as paper, pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, pens, highlighters, and a binder for “PORTAFOLIO” and “DIARIO”
Students will need a dictionary English / Spanish and Spanish / English to be used for class work, homework and projects.
Academic Grading System: The semester grades are to be determined as follows :
· Day to day Activities: Class work, Oral Communication (dialogues, plays, reading), and Participation: (30%)
· Quizzes: (25%)
· Test: (Midterm tests, chapter test, projects (20%)
· Portafolio/ Diario / Pictionario: (25%) The “Portafolio” is revised every ten assignments. Each assignment needs to be done completely and corrected `
Academic Grading System:

There is a zero (0) tolerance for cheating. All work will be assigned a grade of 0 and no make up will be allowed.
Participation: You must make a concerted effort to speak Spanish in class and participate in all class activities. Student prepares assigned materials, homework and exercises prior to class; attends entire class period; listens attentively to teacher and classmates; participates actively in pair and small group activities; attempts to communicate in Spanish; volunteers information and/or answers but also allows other students the opportunity to answer.
Homework: Homework is any assignment referred to as Tarea. These may include readings; grammar exercises, vocabulary sections, online assignments, or other activities. Homework is an extension of the lesson, a way of reinforcing the material learned in class, and of preparing for the next class o for quizzes.
Absences and Late work: Assignments will not be accepted late, unless approved by Sra. Garzon. All assignments will be due on the dates indicated in class. Homework, projects, reports and exercises must be completed before coming to class. When a student is absent, that student is responsible for obtaining his/her work from Sra. Garzon or from another student.. Students are allowed one day for every day they are absent to turn in their missed work. There will be no extra credit work assigned.
Conferences and Communication: Email is the best way to contact me. I will return all emails within two school days of receipt. If you wish to schedule a conference, please contact Jennifer Miller in the main office. Parents can see me on Mondays – Fridays from 7:15 -8:15 AM
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT RULES:
1. Come in to the class quietly and remain in seats
2. Bring class material: Portafolio, Pictionary, dictionary, pen, pencil, paper, etc.
3. No food or gum in class at any time; Cell phones or other PEDs are not allowed in the classroom either
4. Respect the teacher and your peers at all times.
5. Raise your hand for permission to speak or get out of your seat
6. Use the bathroom during the change of class
