SEMANA 9: DEL 1 PRIMERO AL 5 DE OCTURBRE (WEEK 9: FROM OCTOBER 1 TO 5 2012)

Let’s keep celebrating the Hispanic Heritage Month(Sep. 15 to Oct. 15) and honoring the contributions that Latinos have made to America. Also it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.

As we all know Hispanic-Americans has made significant contributions to the development of this country and these contributions have made mark in politics, public service, the entertainment industry, sports,  science and much more.

In the field of Public Service, Sonia Sotomayor is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States , serving since August 2009. She is the first Hispanic Justice, and its third female. Judge Sonia Sotomayor has arguably  lived the American dream. She has born to a Puerto Rican family and grew up in a public housing project in the South Bronx.

In the world of entertainment, Gloria Estefan is an example of many. She is a Cuban American singer, songwriter and actress.

SEMANA 7: DEL 17 AL 21 DE SEPTIEMBRE (WEEK 7: FROM SEPTEMBER 17 TO 21 2012)

Let’s celebrate the Hispanic Heritage Month!

¡Celebremos el Mes de la Herencia Hispana!

Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. This national initiative celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens of Spanish, Mexican, Caribbean, and Central and South American descent.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
We will be honoring this month by working on our zone of culture: Activities related to the Hispanic Heritage Month.
